This bowl season has a few intriguing regional games, and the Fight Hunger Bowl between BYU and Washington is certainly one of them.

The Cougars started the season with a puzzling loss to Virginia, and put a historic beat down on Texas the next week by a final score of 40-21. After a loss to Utah (another puzzling one), the Cougars won five in a row -- all against bowl teams (with the biggest being Utah State, Georgia Tech and Boise State). Losses down the stretch to Wisconsin and Notre Dame prevented BYU from reaching higher heights, but with two sophomores leading a very strong rushing offense, they have promise for next season.

Washington started the season with a blowout win over Boise State, and wins over Illinois and Arizona made them a hot pick for a Pac-12 run. The Huskies lost three in a row to the top teams in the conference, falling to Stanford, Oregon and Arizona State, and eventually lost to UCLA, the fourth-best team in the conference. Washington defeated Cal, Colorado, Oregon State and Washington State, finishing the year at 8-4.

The numbers

Rankings and records: Neither team is ranked. Washington went 8-4, with a 5-4 Pac-12 record good for third in the North. BYU also went 8-4 this season. The all-time series is tied at 4-4, but BYU has won the last three games between the two programs.

Vegas: Washington is a three-point favorite. The over/under is 60.

Weather: Low 40s.

Three names to know

Taysom Hill. Hill gained national attention by running all over Texas, but can throw the ball around the field as well, making him a legitimate dual-threat.

Keith Price. Speaking of dual-threats -- Hill may have the running advantage out of the two, but Price is an excellent passer.

Bishop Sankey. Ka'Deem Carey and Andre Williams received all the awards attention, but Sankey is in that elite class of best running backs in the nation.

Two things at stake

The Chris Petersen era starts next year at Washington, and a win here would provide positive momentum for that change.

While Petersen won’t be coaching this game, BYU will be looking to defeat a Petersen team for the second time this year.
