2014 NFL Draft: Utah TE Jake Murphy declares

After two strong games to finish the season, Utah tight end Jake Murphy is making an early jump to the NFL.

Utah tight end Jake Murphy announced his intention to enter the 2014 NFL Draft on his Twitter page Friday.

Murphy, who stands 6’4 tall and weighs 252 pounds, only played in eight games this season for Utah because of a wrist injury. He caught 25 passes for 417 yards and five touchdowns. While his decision may come as a bit of a surprise, Murphy is married with a young daughter and mentioned his family as one of the main reasons for ending his college career early.

“This has been a really tough decision for me to make and one that I do not take lightly,” Murphy said in a statement released by Utah. “In the end, I had to make the choice that was best for my family -- my wife and my daughter. Although I will miss playing college football, I am very confident in my abilities and ready to pursue my dream of playing in the NFL.”

Murphy broke his wrist in October but managed to return and have two of the best games of his college career. He caught five passes for 102 yards against Washington State and eight passes for 93 yards against Colorado. He enters a tight end class headlined by fellow underclassmen Austin Seferian-Jenkins of Washington, Jace Amaro of Texas Tech and Eric Ebron of North Carolina.
