Notre Dame OC Chuck Martin leaving for Miami (Ohio) head coaching job

The coach won two national titles at Division II Grand Valley State.

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Update:

Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chuck Martin will be offered the vacant head coaching position at Miami of Ohio, Adam Dietrich of Scout is reporting.

Martin has a very interesting background for an offensive coordinator — he played safety in college and was a defensive positional coach (and coordinator) throughout his entire coaching career, even first being hired as the defensive backs coach at Notre Dame. He was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2012, and his teams have finished in the bottom half of the NCAA in scoring offense in both seasons.

Before his time at Notre Dame, Martin was one of the most successful head coaches in the country, leading Division II Grand Valley State to a 74-7 record over six seasons, including back-to-back national championships in 2005 and 2006.

It’s an extremely tough job — the RedHawks’ last successful head coach was Mike Haywood, who led Miami (OH) to a 9-4 season in 2010 before leaving for Pittsburgh (and being fired just weeks later after domestic violence charges). Terry Hoeppner led the team to bowl games in 2003 and 2004 — their first postseason appearances since 1986.
