Zach Mettenberger injury: LSU quarterback has a torn ACL, according to report

Zach Mettenberger will not play in LSU’s bowl game after he reportedly suffered a torn ACL against Arkansas.

LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger will miss the Tigers’ bowl game after he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee, according to a report from Adam Caplan of ESPN.

The senior quarterback suffered the injury during the fourth quarter of LSU’s win against Arkansas on Friday. He had to be helped off the field and was using crutches on the sidelines during the rest of the fourth quarter. He was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Saturday, but LSU head coach Les Miles declined to give an injury update during his press conference on Monday.

“LSU is aware of the ESPN report regarding QB Zach Mettenberger’s injury. At this point, I can’t confirm or deny what ESPN is reporting,” tweeted Michael Bonnette, the Sports Information Director at LSU on Tuesday. “We plan to issue an update on Zach’s injury tomorrow but there won’t be any further comment tonight.”

The injury will be a factor for LSU in its bowl game, but also adds some uncertainty to Mettenberger’s NFL career. Many have projected him as a first-round prospect, but a torn ACL could severely damage his draft stock. SB Nation’s Dan Kadar slotted Mettenberger at No. 7 overall in his latest mock draft. The serious knee injury could cause him to slide out of the first round entirely, especially with it happening so late in the season, though sources told Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun that even with the injury Mettenburg grades out as a first-round pick from at least two NFL talent evaluators.

The Tigers finished the regular season 9-3 and are awaiting a bowl bid. With Mettenberger out of the lineup, freshman Anthony Jennings is likely to step into the starting lineup. He completed 4-of-7 attempts against Arkansas, finishing the game with 76 passing yards and a touchdown.
