Bob Stoops ‘expressed interest’ in leaving Oklahoma for NFL, says NFL Network

The Sooners’ head coach has no experience outside the NCAA.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Black Monday has arrived in the NFL, and with it a whole list of NFL teams looking for new head coaches. Some will look to the college ranks for a fresh start -- especially after the success of Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly -- and Bob Stoops can be added to Bill O'Brien and James Franklin as successful college coaches being looked at by professional teams, the NFL Network is reporting:

"Another name to watch, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. He also has expressed some interest in joining the NFL," Rapoport told Rich Eisen on NFL Network during Monday's coverage of the league's head-coach firings.

Stoops has spent his entire coaching career at the collegiate level as an assistant with Iowa, Kent State, Kansas State and Florida before being hired as Oklahoma’s head coach in 1999. In his time with the Sooners, he has posted a 159-39 record, with nine BCS Bowl game appearances in 15 seasons, including winning the 2000 national championship.

Houston, Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Cleveland and Washington are among the teams looking for a new head coach.
