USC football 2013: Starting LB hurt, to miss spring practice

The sophomore will miss all of spring practice after having shoulder surgery, but should be good to go for the fall.

Otto Greule Jr

USC linebacker Dion Bailey will miss all of spring practice as he recovers from shoulder surgery. Bailey led the Trojans with four interceptions during the 2012 season, and was third on the team with 80 tackles. He also recorded a sack and eight tackles for a loss.

At only 6’1, 210 pounds, Bailey is undersized as a linebacker and said back in December that he wants to move back to safety for the 2013 season. He played safety at Rosewood (Calif.) High School, where he was a four-star recruit and consensus top-10 safety prospect in the 2010 recruiting class.

The spring will be an interesting time for the Trojans, especially on defense. The staff has seen almost a complete turnover, with Clancy Pendergast coming to replace the departed Monte Kiffin. At the position coach level, linebackers coach Scott Hazelton left to go to Nevada, and secondary coach Marvin Sanders was let go. Pendergast, who was formerly the defensive coordinator at Cal, is planning on implementing a “52” defensive scheme, and it remains unclear where Bailey will land in the new system.
