Michigan defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery leaves for Oklahoma

Wolverines lose rising star and top recruiter to Sooners.

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

Michigan defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery has left the Wolverines to take the vacant defensive line position at Oklahoma, as reported by ESPN.com’s Adam Rittenberg. Montgomery spent the previous two seasons on Brady Hoke’s staff, assisting Hoke and defensive coordinator Greg Mattison in rebuilding the Wolverine defensive front. Montgomery is a 2002 graduate of the University of Iowa, where he played defensive tackle. Presumably, it was his ties to Iowa that put Montgomery on Oklahoma’s radar: Montgomery was recruited to Iowa by Hayden Fry, former coach and mentor to both head coach Bob Stoops and defensive coordinator Mike Stoops.

Following his graduation, he spent a season on the Iowa staff as a student assistant and three years in high school and junior college coaching before a three-year stint at Northern Iowa. He also coached the defensive line at Wyoming before coming to Ann Arbor. Montgomery recruited Ohio and the mid-Atlantic for the Wolverines, and was one of the primary recruiters on five-star running back Derrick Green and four-star players Henry Poggi, Taco Charlton, and Jake Butt.
