FAU students to meet with school president over controversial GEO Group name
FAU students will have an opportunity to speak with school president Mary Jane Saunders on Friday about the decision to award the football stadium’s naming rights to a private prison company.

The announcement that GEO Group had been given naming rights earlier this month prompted a swift response from some students and alumni condemning the decision, citing GEO’s controversial history. The issue went national, prompting Stephen Colbert to address the subject.
The GEO Group has been in the news recently for other reasons -- it runs the Broward Transitional Center in Deerfield Beach, which has been forced to release detainees because of the looming federal budget sequestration. This facility is one of the more controversial of GEO Group’s holdings.
GEO Group CEO George Zoley is a Florida Atlantic alumnus. The company bought the naming rights for about $6 million, which is scheduled to be paid over the course of 12 years.
