Kevin Sumlin’s new salary compared with the rest of the SEC

The Aggies’ head coach earned a significant pay raise following an 11-win season.

Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin’s new contract pushes his annual salary to a base of $3.1 million, according to Kate Hairopoulos of The Dallas Morning News. His original contract with the Aggies was worth $2 million per season.

The jump in pay moves Sumlin into the top half of the SEC in compensation -- Les Miles, Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier and Bret Bielema (as well as James Franklin, possibly) are the only coaches in the league making more. Sumlin’s annual salary will increase over the course of the contract, and he has an opportunity to earn bonuses each season for SEC title game appearances and BCS game appearances, among other milestones.

Additionally, the new deal increased the salary pool for his coaching staff from $2.7 million to $3.4 million per season.

The Aggies finished the 2012 season on a six-game winning streak that included a victory over eventual national champion Alabama. Freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy, putting the exclamation point on A&M's breakthrough SEC debut, and the Aggies crushed Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl to wrap up an 11-2 campaign.
