Ameer Abdullah injury: Nebraska star hurts knee in spring ball

The rising junior running back is slated to start for the Huskers in 2013 after a breakout year in 2012.

Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah "tweaked" his knee during a scrimmage on Saturday, according to Huskers head coach Bo Pelini. The injury doesn't appear to be serious, and Abdullah could return before Nebraska holds its spring game on April 6.

Abdullah emerged as a major contributor for the Huskers in 2012, running for 1,137 yards and eight touchdowns after Rex Burkhead went down with a knee injury. The coaching staff may elect to go light on him this spring, as it can't afford to have Abdullah miss large stretches of the regular season. The running back depth is thin right now in Lincoln, as Burkhead has gone on to the NFL and Braylon Heard is transferring, leaving Imani Cross as the only backup running back on the roster that has seen significant carries at the college level.
