Notre Dame football: Amir Carlisle, Chase Hounshell suffer spring injuries

The Fighting Irish suffered a pair of setbacks on Saturday.

Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

Saturday was the first spring practice in pads for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and it proved to be costly. Defensive end Chase Hounshell and running back Amir Carlisle both suffered what appear to be significant injuries, according to Keith Arnold of Inside the Irish. Arnold reports Hounsell may have suffered a torn labrum, while Carlisle was knocked out by a broken collarbone.

Hounshell missed all but the opener of the 2012 season with a shoulder injury and has played just eight games since arriving in South Bend as a freshman. Hounshell was a three-star defensive end prospect coming out of high school in 2011 and has yet to make a mark for the Irish. He may have to wait even longer if reports on his latest setback prove to be accurate.

Carlisle transferred from USC in January 2012 after rushing for 118 yards on 19 carries as a freshman. A broken collarbone likely won’t prevent him from playing in the fall, but it will cut into important time with the first team offense this spring.
