Former Alabama athletic director Mal Moore died on Saturday at the age of 73, just 10 days after his resignation from Alabama.

Moore was hired as Alabama’s athletic director in 1999, and hired Nick Saban as Alabama’s head football coach in 2007. Saban has been nothing short of legendary for Alabama, leading the Crimson Tide’s football program to three national titles in the last four seasons.
In December 2012, Moore was given the John L. Toner Award, which is awarded to an athletic director who demonstrates “superior administrative abilities, and outstanding dedication to college athletics.”
Moore attended Alabama, and was the Crimson Tide’s backup quarterback between 1958 to 1962. During that time, Moore played for Bear Bryant. His coaching career began in 1963, as an assistant coach for Montana State. Moore returned to Alabama the following year as a graduate assistant, and then served as Alabama’s defensive backs coach between 1965 and 1970. Moore furthered his coaching career in 1975, becoming Alabama’s offensive coordinator.
After stints with Notre Dame and the Phoenix Cardinals in the 80s, Moore returned to Alabama in 1990 as the Crimson Tide’s quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator -- the same titles he held between 1975 and 1982. In 1994, Moore was named Alabama’s assistant athletic director before taking over as the athletic director in 1999.
In addition to football, Alabama won three woman’s gymnastics titles, in addition to one softball and women’s golf title under Moore.
