Virginia Tech defensive back Antone Exum had surgery in February to fix an ACL tear in his right knee that he suffered during a game of pick-up basketball. The surgery was handled by Dr. James Andrews, who is a fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide and serves as a consultant for the team. In the post-surgery haze, Exum apparently couldn't resist a few jabs at Andrews and the Tide (via the Virginian-Pilot); Virginia Tech opens next season with a game against Alabama.

Exum had some jabs ready for surgeon James Andrews, and he’s hoping to be back in time to play in the Hokies’ season-opener against the Tide.

Andrews “went up to my mom and was like, ‘He’s delirious in there. All he keeps saying is how he’s going to be back for Alabama and they’re going to beat Alabama,’ ” Exum said. “So I guess that was the first thing on my mind.”
Exum injured the knee while driving into the lane for a layup -- he said he couldn’t hear it, but he felt the snap in his knee. He led the Hokies in 2012 with five interceptions. He recorded 48 tackles, which ranked seventh on the team.
Virginia Tech opens its season with Alabama in Atlanta on Aug. 31. Exum may not be ready for that game, given his six-to-eight month rehab timetable.
