2013 college football spring practice: Buffaloes, Belldozers, Browns and Bobos

Also, some things that don’t start with the letter B, like Gunner Kiel and Will Friend.

Colorado was the only program to start spring practice Thursday when 101 Fightin’ Buffaloes took to the practice fields. For new head coach Mike MacIntyre and his staff, it was their first practice with their new team, and the head coach liked what he saw:

“A good first day, we got a lot of good work in,” MacIntyre said. “They were running, no, flying around out there. I thought the players had a good grasp, a good understanding of what we wanted them to do.”

The Buffaloes are scheduled to play their spring game on April 13.

Notre Dame freshman quarterback Gunner Kiel will be transferring out of South Bend. Kiel, who was widely considered the top quarterback in the Class of 2013, would have likely been behind Everett Golson for the foreseeable future. Gunner has always been a bit of a runner: He committed to Indiana and LSU before finally landing on Notre Dame, and an anonymous BCS-level coach told reporters Thursday that he had already declined a transfer request from Kiel.

Oklahoma starts its spring drills on Saturday, March 9. Head coach Bob Stoops met with the media today in anticipation of the start of spring practice. The team also released an updated depth chart. One thing stood out:

There was no word on the inevitable quarterback controversy in Norman beyond basic platitudes. Stoops said that the Sooners will run some 3-4 formations on the defensive side of the ball, but it will not be the exclusive formation. Oklahoma’s glut of oversized defensive ends certainly helps with defensive line flexibility, but a multiple-formation defense on limited college practice schedules is an ambitious project.

Texas fans have been furious with Mack Brown for failing to keep up with other top programs in recruiting and personnel staffing, especially in light of new NCAA rules that could allow for an entirely separate non-coaching staff to be hired for purposes of recruiting. Mack took a big step forward Thursday, as the program announced that former Alabama associate director of football operations Patrick Suddes would become Texas' player personnel director. If he can arrest the flow of talent headed toward College Station, he'll be well worth the cost.

In other coaching news, Mark Richt has lost control of the Georgia running game. It now belongs to running game coordinator Will Friend, who was already on Georgia’s staff as offensive line coach. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo got a new three-year contract, too.

South Carolina is just trying to scare us with Jadeveon Clowney stuff now:

And finally, it’s not spring football but it’s football nonetheless: The 1939 Army-Navy Game, played three months after the Germans invaded Poland, in vibrant color:
