‘Ill-timed Roll Tide’ gets Bama group booted from Tennessee facility

An Alabama alumni group will no longer be able to hold meetings on Tennessee’s campus after letting loose a “Roll Tide.” This is real life.

College rivalries are fun. Well, they’re fun to watch anyway, but every now and then they make normally sensible people do bizarre and completely unreasonable things. Our latest example of this comes from Tennessee, which, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, expelled a group of Alabama alumni for chanting “Roll Tide” in an on-campus building.

"We’re sure the fine folks at Alabama would not want us singing ‘Rocky Top’ in their admissions office," said Karen Simsen, a UT spokeswoman. "We want our visitor’s center to be all about UT, campus traditions and what it feels like to be a student here. So we had to talk to the (alumni group) about how we have a new use for the building."

The Alabama group had been using a building in Knoxville for monthly luncheons since the early 1970s, but the building became part of the UT admissions office in 2006, and is also the starting point for campus tours.

One question naturally rises from this brouhaha: Why is Tennessee so scared of Alabama?
