Miller was “sacked” five times in the first quarter of the game, played in front of 37,643 at Cincinnati’s Paul Brown Stadium due to construction at Ohio Stadium, but let’s be honest: nobody would’ve brought down Miller if they were able to tackle him. There were a variety of plays where Miller looked as if he would have squiggled loose that were blown dead by referees, since he wasn’t live for the game. It’s for the best -- Miller did get tackled earlier in spring practice, and he really didn’t enjoy it -- but spring rules are spring rules.
However, when plays weren’t blown dead, he looked like the guy who could be a Heisman candidate in 2013: confident on his feet, with pretty touch on his passes. A sampling from Land-Grant Holy Land, whose coverage of the game was pretty thorough:
So, yeah, Braxton Miller. Kenny Guiton, his backup, actually didn’t have that bad a day -- he threw 9-for-13 with 116 yards and a touchdown in the first half -- the Gray team before being swapped to the Scarlet team when Miller’s day was done -- but the competition couldn’t keep up with Miller. Miller was 16-for-25 with 217 yards and two passing touchdowns, plus one running.
