Redshirt freshman Jameis Winston starred in Florida State's spring game as the Gold defeated the Garnet, 40-24, Saturday in Tallahassee. Winson's performance -- 12-of-15 passing for 205 yards and two touchdowns against the first-team FSU defense -- might have hoisted him to the top of the Seminoles' crowded quarterback depth chart. Winston hit David Tyrell for a 58-yard touchdown on his first play from scrimmage, burning Lamarcus Joyner in the process.

The redshirt freshman quarterback showed impressive physical and mental skills in an artful performance.

Junior-to-be Clint Trickett also played well, completing 22-of-32 passes for 259 yards and a score. Jacob Coker went 11-of-19 passing for 153 yards and a score, and led the Gold team with 11 yards rushing.
Senior wide receiver Kenny Shaw caught 12 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown. Kelvin Benjamin added eight receptions for 141 yards and a touchdown. Rashad Greene hauled in 11 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown.
Afterwards, fans were swooning over Winston. Tomahawk Nation was impressed:
Winston’s not the first talented freshman to come around, but he’s just different than anything in recent memory. It’s his demeanor that separates him from the pack. In a quarterback competition against a fourth year guy like Clint Trickett, you’d think the redshirt freshman would lack in the leadership department, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s easy to see in the way he carries himself. Whether it’s his determination, dedication, or willingness to put the burden on his shoulders, he seems to be that guy. Winston is first on the field to congratulate the offensive line when they score a touchdown with another quarterback, he’s the one shaking every player’s hand after a bad practice, and he even cuts post-game interviews short so he can run over to join his baseball team. With the immense pressure that he must carry around being a college student and a two-sport athlete, it’s clear to see he thrives under that pressure.
