Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan completed 14 of 23 pass attempts for 170 yards and two touchdowns in Stanford’s spring game Saturday. The game took the format of an offense/defense scrimmage, with the defense receiving points for where it stopped the offense on the field. After a furious comeback, the defense won 40-34.

The passing game had been a concern entering spring after the departure of tight ends Zach Ertz and Levine Toilolo, wide receivers Drew Terrell and Jamal-Rashad Patterson, and halfback Stepfan Taylor. The five departing players had accounted for 76 percent of the Cardinal's pass receptions in 2012 and 83 percent of its receiving yardage. But Hogan quickly showed that his new cast of targets could fill those large shoes. Wide receivers Ty Montgomery and Michael Rector caught long touchdown tosses and sophomore wideout Jeff Trojan led the team with six catches for 41 yards. Freshman Jordan Pratt, who caught just one pass in his first season at Stanford, hauled in five catches Saturday, racking up 78 yards and a score.
Later, backup Stanford quarterback Evan Crower, who did not play in 2012, shook off the rust to complete 26 of 35 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns.
Linebacker Jarek Lancaster led the defense with seven tackles, including one tackle for a loss. Safety Kyle Olugbode and cornerback Alex Carter had six tackles each. Olugbode also recorded two tackles for loss.
