The Nittany Lions had a surprisingly good year in 2012, considering all that happened around the program in the previous year. First year head coach Bill O’Brien looks like he’s the man for the job, but the next few years will be difficult due to crushing NCAA sanctions. The team may not fully feel the effects of those sanctions in 2013, but depth is already an issue that could cause major problems. The team has solid contributors at a lot of positions, but those players are backed up by underclassmen and walk ons, so even a few injuries could be devastating.
The biggest position battle this spring is at quarterback, as sophomore Steven Bench, JUCO transfer Tyler Ferguson, and five-star recruit Christian Hackenberg are all competing for the starting spot vacated by Matt McGloin. Hackenberg won't be on campus until this summer, so right now Bench and Ferguson are fighting it out, and the two are reportedly neck and neck.
On defense, the biggest position battle is at linebacker, where replacements must be found for the NFL-bound duo of Michael Mauti and Gerald Hodges. Glenn Carson remains at middle linebacker, and Mike Hull, Nyeem Wartman, and Ben Kline will fight it out to for the two outside linebacker jobs.
