Notre Dame football has NBC extension, isn’t joining ACC any time soon

The Fighting Irish will have their games broadcast on NBC until 2025, as they have agreed to a 10-year extension with the television network.

Notre Dame and NBC have agreed to a 10-year extension, according to a press release from the network. The release did not indicate how much the contract will be worth, but it will almost surely keep the Fighting Irish from becoming a full member of the ACC for the foreseeable future.

NBC has broadcast Fighting Irish football games since 1991, and their TV contract with NBC has allowed them to maintain their independent status and not join a conference. Some thought that the school’s decision to move all non-football sports to the ACC would be a prelude to full conference membership, as the agreement mandates that Notre Dame play five ACC schools every year. However, until Notre Dame is unable to get their own television deal, they simply don’t have to join a conference.

As part of their deal with the ACC, Notre Dame will also have a limited Orange Bowl tie-in, which will guarantee the Fighting Irish the opportunity to play in at least two Orange Bowls over the next 12 years.
