The Spartans have a different format for their spring game than most. Rather than simply dividing the team into offense vs. defense, the seniors are split into two groups, and then draft the underclassmen. Sometimes the results of the draft can be telling, but even if not, it’s an interesting way to do things. You can see the results of the draft here, as it was just conducted on Wednesday.
The greatest point of interest for Michigan State fans will probably be at running back, where a replacement must be found for NFL-bound workhorse Le'Veon Bell. Bell led the nation in carries last year with 382 in 13 games, and he carried the Spartan offense almost by himself. Nick Hill and Jeremy Langford will be the two backs fighting for the No. 1 job, but it will take more than one of them to replace Bell's production.
On defense, the two biggest losses are defensive end William Gholston and cornerback Johnny Adams. Gholston frequently drew double teams from opposing teams, allowing other defenders to do their jobs in one-on-one scenarios. Shilique Calhoun is the favorite to take Gholston's starting spot across from Marcus Rush. Adams, who was one of, if not the best cover corner in the Big Ten in 2012, will not be easy to replace, but Trae Waynes and Ezra Robinson are the two players battling to take his spot.
