West Virginia’s quarterback battle might find a winner from outside the program -- Florida State transfer Clint Trickett is taking a look at the Mountaineers.

When initially reporting the news of Trickett's transfer, SB Nation's Tomahawk Nation learned that Trickett was considering either USF -- where he has connections to head coach Willie Taggert -- or the Mountaineers.
Trickett, who had spent the last two seasons as E.J. Manuel's backup, decided to transfer shortly after all-everything freshman phenom Jameis Winston dazzled in Florida State's spring game. Since Trickett graduates from Florida State in May, he'll be able to play immediately as a graduate transfer. He'll have two years of eligibility remaining.
Trickett's services would be especially welcome at West Virginia, where the Mountaineers find themselves in the midst of a quarterback battle between two unproven entities. Paul Millard, who backed up Smith the past two seasons, is just 16-for-34 on his career with as many touchdowns as picks. Meanwhile, Ford Childress is a redshirt freshman who has never played. Trickett's not exactly a sure thing either, but he's looked nice in a reserve role at Florida State -- 66-for-96 with 947 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions, including a three-touchdown, 336-yard outing against Clemson as a freshman. The Mountaineers will need a strong quarterback to operate Dana Holgorsen's Air Raid a year after going 7-5.
