There are bigger things in Boston than a spring football game, and Boston College decided it wouldn’t make sense to scrimmage Saturday.

Fans had hyped up the game, both as an opportunity to see some live football under a new head coach and as an opportunity to celebrate Boston, but there are bigger things at stake. The bombing at Monday's Boston Marathon - as well as the search for the perpetrators, which put the entire metropolitan area on lockdown Friday morning - made having a somewhat meaningless football exhibition both impractical and unnecessary.
For their part, Boston College has done an amazing job in response to the tragic events of the past week. The community raised over $200,000 for the medical costs of an injured alumnus, and organized a “Last Five” walk for those who didn’t finish the marathon as a gesture of solidarity, but were forced to postpone it when 17,000 people said they planned on attending on Facebook - more than they bargained for.
