Phillip Fulmer to advise East Tennessee State football relaunch

The Buccaneers are ready to bring college football back by 2015, and they’ll have an in-state legend ready to assist them.

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

East Tennessee State is all set to bring football back to their university in 2015, and they have Phillip Fulmer to advise them. Josh Smith of WJHL reports that the Tennessee legend is ready to return to the collegiate ranks and will help out the university in finding a suitable coach. He will have a role in relaunching the Buccaneers program, although it’s technically an untitled role. At this point, it doesn’t look like he will be coaching.
Fulmer hasn’t been in the college football ranks since 2008, when he was released after going 5-7 in his final year with the Tennessee Volunteers. He went 152-52 with the Vols during his 16 year stand as Tennessee’s head coach, including capturing a national title in 1998. But East Tennessee State has wanted Fulmer since the beginning of the process (as a coach originally, but it looked like Fulmer wasn’t ready to make that commitment) and are ready to bring him on to get the program ready to go two years from now.
