Penn State spring game recap 2013: Defense dominates in Nittany Lion scrimmage

Quarterback race remains unresolved, while Lynch shines at running back.

USA TODAY Sports

Defense dominated in a 67-47 Blue victory at the 2013 Blue-White Game, played Saturday at Beaver Stadium. The Blue (defense) spent much of the day wreaking havoc in the White (offense) backfield and taking advantage of a scoring system that gave four points for a sack and two for a backfield tackle. After an early White scoring drive, the Blue team methodically pulled away.

Head coach Bill O'Brien was pleased with the performance, telling reporters that he wanted his players to have fun and that he kept the schemes simple Saturday. The players had to deal with some bizarre weather conditions, with occasional snow flurries in the first half giving way to sunshine and temperatures in the 60s during the second half.

The quarterback derby in Happy Valley remains even after Saturday's scrimmage, with Steven Bench and Tyler Ferguson each completing 9 of 15 pass attempts. Bench finished the day with 99 passing yards, and Ferguson with 90. Running back Akeel Lynch impressed in the Nittany Lion backfield, scoring a first quarter touchdown.

On defense, end C.J. Olaniyan, who was named co-most improved player of the spring by the coaching staff, recorded a sack in the first half. Linebacker Mike Hull drew praise from O'Brien after the game.
