Virginia Tech RB Michael Holmes arrested, according to report

Michael Holmes was expected to be a factor in Virginia Tech’s running game, but an arrest for apparently violent crimes puts that up in the air.

Bob Donnan-US PRESSWIRE

Virginia Tech running back Michael Holmes was arrested Sunday, charged with two counts of assault and one of “malicious wounding,” per the Richmond Times Dispatch. The timeline and scenario that led to Holmes’ arrest is unclear, but due to the serious nature of the crimes, he’s currently being held without bail.

Holmes, a rising sophomore, was expected to be one of the big factors in Virginia Tech’s backfield this season. He was the starter on opening day last season, succeeding first-round pick David Wilson, but wasn’t particularly effective as the Hokies settled into an offense based on loads and loads of Logan Thomas. He finished the year with 280 yards on 70 carries, with four touchdowns.

But with new offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler, there was a sense that running back would be reemphasized, and Holmes was one of three players competing to be the starter. Armed with a dyed-orange hairdo, Holmes led all backs with 24 yards rushing in the team’s spring game Saturday. But his involvement with what seems to be a somewhat violent crime probably puts his status with the team up in the air.
