Wisconsin football wants LSU at Lambeau Field

Wisconsin is attempting to schedule a future game at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, preferably against LSU, according to Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Talks between Wisconsin and Southeastern Conference power Alabama dragged on for several years before the two programs eventually agreed to open the 2015 college football season at Cowboys Stadium.

Encouraged by that agreement and looking to bolster UW’s nonconference schedules because of the four-team playoff set to begin with the 2014 season, athletic director Barry Alvarez is in the market for another neutral-site game.

That quest could lead to a game at Lambeau Field. According to a college football source, UW officials would like to play LSU, another SEC power.

Wisconsin is already scheduled to play Alabama at Dallas’ Cowboys Stadium in 2015, so any game at Lambeau Field would likely take place in 2016 or later. Green Bay Packers director of public affairs Aaron Popkey told Potrkyus that the NFL would schedule around any game, should the Packers make a request. Lambeau Field made a longshot bid to host the Big Ten title game, but the outdoor venue was quickly dismissed from consideration.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez has frequently discussed the importance of scheduling difficult opponents after 2014, when the new College Football Playoff begins. With only four spots available in the new playoff format and a selection committee critiquing all potential participants, a nine-game Big Ten slate may not be enough to get in without some non-conference heavyweights. This could lead to additional neutral-site games as an alternative to home-and-home series.
