Texas A&M football stadium could become bigger than the Longhorns’

Texas A&M has been talking about expanding Kyle Field for some time now, but it looks like the school will be adding roughly 20,000 seats to the Hate Barn.

Bob Levey

The Texas A&M Board of Regents is expected to vote to expand Kyle Field to hold close to 103,000 people, according to Billy Liucci of TexAgs.com. That would bring the stadium’s capacity above that of Texas’ Darrell K. Royal-Memorial Stadium, and make it one of the five biggest football stadiums in the nation.

The home of the Aggies, which was once referred to by our own Spencer Hall as “[A] concrete hate barn so loud the crowd once received a flag for delay of game,” currently holds 82,589, making it the 16th-largest stadium in the nation. The Board was apparently faced with two options for expanding the stadium, and has opted to go with the larger project. The smaller expansion would have brought capacity to around 95,000.

If Kyle Field is expanded to an even 103,000, it will be the largest stadium in the SEC, and third-largest stadium in the country, behind only Michigan Stadium (109,901) and Penn State’s Beaver Stadium (106,572).
