The Big East is now officially the American Athletic Conference as of this past Wednesday, but it isn’t the first AAC athletic conference.
Original AAC not delighted about Big East Conference’s new name
Turns out an AAC already existed. And so did “The American.” Of course.

The Appalachian Athletic Conference has been operating as an NAIA conference since 2001, and according to CBSSports.com’s Jeremy Fowler, the Big East didn’t reach out before adopting the same initials. AAC commissioner John Sullivan doesn’t sound too mad about it, as the likelihood of confusion between the two conferences is pretty low OR IS IT HAHAHAHA--
The conference is going to go by “The American,” which would clear up any chance of confusion with the already-existing AAC, but could create an entirely different problem: People who would confuse a UCF-Memphis game in The American for the tepidly received 2010 George Clooney film of the same name.
Don’t these people have lawyers?
