Devonte Fields suspended: Star TCU DE to miss LSU game

The Horned Frogs will be without last year’s Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year for the first two games due to a violation of team policy.

Jerome Miron-US PRESSWIRE

TCU star defensive end Devonte Fields has been suspended for the first two games of the 2013 season, according to head coach Gary Patterson. The reason given for the suspension was simply a violation of team policy, and no further details were given.

Fields just finished his freshman year in Ft. Worth, but he's probably the biggest name on the vaunted Horned Frog defense. He recorded 10 sacks and 18.5 tackles for a loss as a true freshman, and was named the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year and named first team All-Big 12.

This may not be a total shocker to those close to the program, however. Patterson said last month that Fields had a disappointing spring, and there were worries about his work ethic entering his sophomore season. This suspension could serve as a wake up call that he can’t simply rest on his laurels, but needs to keep working.

The two-game suspension will take Fields out of the season opener against LSU at Cowboy Stadium, as well as the Week 2 game against Southeastern Louisiana. Without Fields and the NFL-bound Stansly Maponga rushing the quarterback, the Horned Frogs look like a much less enticing upset pick.
