Notre Dame talking unique kind of football stadium expansion

The university is looking into transforming the stadium into the focal point of campus.

University of Notre Dame

Notre Dame unveiled a potential plan for renovating their football stadium on Thursday, a plan that would turn the famous stadium into the focal point for student and academic activity on campus. Considering the high regard most Notre Dame fans have for tradition, this plan should evoke a multitude of reactions:

While the plan is only being discussed at this point, the school has already had mock ups made for it. New additions could include classroom space, a student center, a media center, a connection to the adjacent Joyce Center, and the stadium could be expanded to include more “premium seating options,” a fountain outside the stadium, and a new shamrock logo at the 50-yard line. Don’t worry, though, you should still be able to see Touchdown Jesus from inside the stadium.

For the sake of reference, here’s what Notre Dame Stadium and its immediate outskirts currently look like:

If this or a similar plan go through in South Bend, it wouldn’t be the first time a football stadium was used in a non-athletic context. It may be the most extensive non-athletic use of a stadium, though, which at the very least is an interesting concept.
