Texas A&M drops Oregon, USC series from future schedules

Texas A&M won’t be playing Oregon and USC, actually.

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

Texas A&M had impressed by adding marquee opponents in Oregon and USC to their upcoming schedules, but their move to the SEC has compelled them to cancel the games, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The home-and-home series were scheduled in 2009, with the Aggies facing USC in 2015 and 2016 and Oregon in 2018 and 2019. They were getting a bit ahead of themselves, though eventually deciding to swap out the Big 12 for the SEC.

As the league works out its scheduling for future years -- there’s still debate about whether the league will play eight or nine games -- the Aggies removed the upcoming series. From the Houston Chronicle:

Those games are no longer part of A&M’s plans, Hyman said, because “having switched from the Big 12 to the SEC, we’ve had to scrub our whole schedule - throw it almost out. Going forward, we’ve had conversations with people, but we really can’t be contractually (obligated) until the conference says you’ve got the green light.“Hyman said that he wants his team to play one FCS opponent, one BCS team, and one “national” game every season, but stressed that planning games as far ahead as the USC and Oregon series was out of the question. Considering the SEC tends to be a tad more difficult than the Big 12, the loss of two marquee opponents will also be great news for the Aggies’ win column.

The series with USC was actually announced prematurely:
