Robb Akey suing Idaho after firing

Robb Akey is bitter over Idaho’s decision to fire him midway through the season and withhold the $105,000 he would have been paid had he coached out the year. He’s suing to get that money from the school.

Robb Akey has filed a lawsuit against the University of Idaho, seeking full payment after the school terminated his contract in the middle of the 2012 season, reports Spokane, Washington CBS affiliate KREM.

The school decided to part ways with Akey after his squad started off the season 1-7, guaranteeing his fifth losing season in six at the helm of the Vandals. If the school had allowed him to coach out the season, he would have been owed an extra $105,000, and he took issue with the school’s decision not to pay him. Now, he’s taking legal action to get that money. From KREM reporter Hayley Guenthner:

Akey’s contract, extended in 2010, carried through the end of the 2014 season, and was making $375,797 per season, according to USA Today’s coach salary database. He’s still in line to earn his base salary of about $165,796 for each of the next two seasons, provided he doesn’t take a job as a coach somewhere else.
