Michigan and Virginia Tech announce home and home series

The Wolverines and Hokies will renew acquaintances in 2020 and 2021.

Matthew Stockman

The Michigan Wolverines and Virginia Tech Hokies will play a home-and-home series, the schools announced on Thursday. The Hokies will travel to Ann Arbor in 2020, and the Wolverines will make the return trip down to Blacksburg in 2021. The series will be a rematch of the 2012 Sugar Bowl, in which Michigan hung on to beat Virginia Tech, 23-20, in overtime.

Michigan has traditionally not been shy about scheduling a decent out-of-conference opponent. It didn’t go well for them, but they played Alabama to start the 2012 season, and currently are scheduled to play Utah, Oregon State, BYU, Cincinnati and Arkansas between 2014 and 2019.

Virginia Tech has also traditionally made efforts to schedule challenging out-of-conference games. They’ve played Alabama and Boise State on neutral sites in the past few years, and are scheduled to play Ohio State, Wisconsin and Notre Dame between 2014 and 2017. In an interesting note, according to David Teel of the Daily Press, the Hokies have never played a Big Ten team in the regular season before, but are loading up on them over the course of the next 10 years.
