Running back Rushel Shell will not be returning to the Pittsburgh Panthers, according to Sam Werner of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. ESPN's Brett McMurphy confirmed this report. Shell left Pitt in the spring and decided at that point to transfer to UCLA, but he had a change of heart recently. Reports circulating over the weekend indicated that Shell might be trying to work out a return to the Panthers in an effort to stay close to his children, who live in Pennsylvania.
Rushel Shell not returning to Pitt football, according to report
A reunion between Shell and Pittsburgh won’t be happening.
According to Werner’s source, Pittsburgh was never a serious option for Shell in this case. Shell made the choice to transfer to UCLA relatively quickly after leaving the Pitt program in April, and perhaps that decision ended up being too hasty.
Now he’ll have to find yet another home, and where that might be at this point is unclear. He is a potential impact player wherever he lands, though; he finished the 2012 season with 641 yards rushing and four scores on 141 carries for Pittsburgh.
