Gordon Gee retiring as Ohio State president after controversial remarks

The Ohio State president will be leaving his office at the end of the month after another set of embarrassing statements went public.

Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports

Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee will retire on July 1, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Gee will announce his retirement formally on Tuesday afternoon in an email to the Ohio State students and faculty. Provost Joseph A. Alutto will be stepping in to serve as the interim president until a permanent replacement can be found. Gee served as Ohio State’s president from 1990-1997 and 2007-2013.

Gee has been in the news of late for a series of embarrassing remarks he made regarding Notre Dame, Louisville, and the SEC. He has since apologized to many of the parties he mentioned, including former Wisconsin and current Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema.

This was far from the first time Gee had made controversial statements, and he had agreed to a “remediation plan” recommended by the university’s board of trustees, as well as a coach to keep him from saying provocative things in the future. However, it would appear that Gee won’t have to do any of that now.
