John Atkins’ arrest is the most Georgia arrest of 2013

Even by Georgia standards, John Atkins being taken in for driving with a learner’s permit is pretty strange.

Daniel Shirey-US PRESSWIRE

Georgia Bulldogs defensive tackle John Atkins was arrested for driving with a learner's permit, according to the Athens Banner-Herald. Yes, you read that right, he was arrested for driving with only a learner's permit. Head coach Mark Richt said the matter will be handled internally, and will not involve any playing time restrictions.

Atkins was apparently on his way to meet his mother to get his driver’s license issue sorted out. He was released on $1000 bond quickly after being taken in by university police.

While this is clearly the most Georgia arrest of 2013, it still doesn’t touch Jordan Love’s 2010 arrest for failing to disclose his middle name to a police officer.

Is Mark Richt running a rogue program? How many more of these arrests will we have to hear about before the Georgia leadership stands up and says, “Enough is enough!” These are all relevant questions. Also relevant: Maybe the police in Athens are bored?
