Former Auburn head coach Gene Chizik to host radio show

Chizik will take to the satellite airwaves this fall.

Marvin Gentry-US PRESSWIRE

Former Auburn and Iowa State head coach Gene Chizik, who led the Tigers to the 2010 national championship, will host a radio show on SiriusXM College beginning this fall, according to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy.

Chizik doesn’t have a lot of broadcasting experience, but he did help to provide analysis for ESPN’s coverage of the 2011 BCS Championship Game, in which Alabama defeated LSU, 21-0. He has a steady voice without much of an accent -- perfect for national radio -- and is considered to be an all-around good guy, liked by most in the college football business.

Chizik led Auburn to a BCS championship game win over Oregon in his second season on the Plains, but it went all downhill from there for the Tigers. Without the likes of Heisman winner Cam Newton, Lombardi winner Nick Fairley and a number of other contributors, Auburn dropped off to 8-5 in 2011. Last season, the bottom fell out, as the Tigers fell to 3-9 overall and 0-8 in SEC play. It was Auburn's first winless season in conference play since 1950.

If Chizik’s radio career doesn’t work out, he can always try to re-launch his line of specialty washcloths.
