Former Syracuse coach Greg Robinson joins Texas’ staff under Mack Brown

Greg Robinson has had a rough go of things since leaving Texas in 2005 to become Syracuse’s head coach. But he’s back in Austin, although it isn’t clear what his role is.

Someone has hired Greg Robinson to do something related to football, and that someone is the University of Texas, bringing the former defensive coordinator back as a “football analyst.”

Robinson has worked under Mack Brown before, as the Longhorns’ defensive coordinator back in 2004, returning to the college game after stints in the same position with the New York Jets, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. He was a success, as the team went 11-1, with a defense that only allowed more than 30 points twice, both Longhorns wins.

But it’s been quite the fall from grace for Robinson: he took the head coaching job with Syracuse, and failed to win more than four games in any of his four seasons. They won only three Big East games across four years, and Robinson was canned toward the end of a 3-9 season in 2008. He took a job as the defensive coordinator under Rich Rodriguez, and his teams ranked 82nd and 110th in total defense, leading to Robinson’s firing after the year, alongside Rodriguez.

He’s been out of football since, but now he’s back, in a role that Texas’ website indicates will be in their new “player personnel” department, dealing with scouting of opposition and quality control. Manny Diaz is the defensive coordinator, and defensive backs coach Duane Akina is listed as the team’s assistant head coach, so Robinson isn’t too high up the food chain. That said, they could use some help stopping opponents. Texas’ defense wasn’t great this past year, allowing 29.2 points per game in the offense-heavy Big 12, 72nd in the nation and sixth in the conference.
