SEC reportedly considering more kickoff games in Houston

The conference may be looking to add more neutral-site contests.

Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

The SEC is contemplating more season-opening marquee matchups at Houston’s Reliant Stadium in coming years, according to CBS Sports’ Jeremy Fowler.

SEC teams are already set to open the next two seasons in Houston, as Mississippi State plays Oklahoma State in 2013 and LSU squares off against Wisconsin in 2014. In recent years, several SEC teams have opened with big neutral-site games. LSU met Oregon at Dallas’ Cowboys Stadium to begin the 2011 season, and Alabama faced Michigan at the same venue last year. The Chick-fil-A College Kickoff has featured SEC teams at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome every year since its inception in 2008.

In addition to Mississippi State playing in Houston this season, Alabama will play in the Chick-fil-A game for the third time, facing the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Crimson Tide and Hokies met in Atlanta to open the 2009 season, with 'Bama claiming a 34-24 win, and Nick Saban's team defeated Clemson, 34-10, in the 2008 edition of the event. Last season, the Georgia Dome hosted two kickoff games, with Tennessee topping N.C. State and Auburn falling to Clemson.
