Penn State, West Virginia set to renew rivalry in 2020

The Nittany Lions and Mountaineers would be facing each other for the first time in almost 30 years.

Justin K. Aller

Penn State and West Virginia are in the final stages of an agreement that would get the old rivals back together, according to CBSSports.com’s Jeremy Fowler. The home-and-home series looks like it will start in the 2020 season, but details are still forthcoming as to where and when the games will be played.

The Nittany Lions and Mountaineers played every year between 1947 and 1992, but the series went on hiatus when Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1993. Penn State holds a commanding 48-9-2 series lead, but past history will have little to do with how the programs are playing in 2020.

Penn State has been reconnecting with some of its old rivals recently, and is scheduled to now play Pitt, Syracuse and West Virginia over the next decade. West Virginia is doing a bit of the same as well, with athletic director Oliver Luck saying that the Mountaineers want to get their old rivals back on the schedule. It looks like they’re doing so, since aside from the Penn State series, the Mountaineers recently agreed to a series with Virginia Tech.
