Oklahoma and head coach Bob Stoops reached a contract extension through the 2020 season, the school announced Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

If he coaches the length of the new contract, Stoops will be patrolling the Sooners’ sidelines for another seven years.

Stoops is due to make $4.55 million this season, his 15th in Norman. Since taking over the Sooners in 1999, he has had plenty of success, winning a national title in 2000 and compiling a 149-37 record overall and a 99-23 mark in Big 12 play. Oklahoma has won 10 or more games 11 times under Stoops, and the team has claimed eight conference championships.
In a statement released Thursday, OU president David Boren said Stoops has been of great value to the school:
“We took this action to express the University’s deep appreciation for Bob Stoops’ work,” Boren said. “In my opinion, he ranks among the very best nationally in the way he combines his ability as a coach with high ethical standards. I greatly value and enjoy my association with Bob and feel extremely fortunate that at the University of Oklahoma we have the longest continuous tenure of the current head football coach, athletics director and president.”
Stoops needs eight more wins as Oklahoma head coach to tie the school’s all-time record, currently held by Barry Switzer. Switzer coached the Sooners for 16 seasons, winning 157 games compared to 29 losses and four ties. He won three national championships and 12 Big Eight titles during his tenure.
Under Stoops, Oklahoma is 81-5 at home and has never won fewer than seven games in a season. He has produced 65 NFL Draft picks, 33 first-team All-Americans and two Heisman Trophy winners.
