Michigan State offensive tackle Skyler Burkland will forego his final two seasons of eligibility and retire from football because of multiple injuries, the school announced Tuesday.

Burkland, who was set to enter his junior season with the Spartans, applied for medical disqualification on June 30, and will be eligible to remain on scholarship while he completes his degree at Michigan State. He won’t count toward the school’s 85-scholarship limit. Head coach Mark Dantonio confirmed Burkland’s decision in a statement.
“This was a difficult decision for Skyler,” Dantonio said. “We’ll certainly miss him on the football field, but he’ll remain heavily involved in our program and continue to work on earning his degree.”
Burkland started 14 games at right tackle during his Spartans career, including 11 in 2012 after missing the first two games of the season with a hand injury. Two years ago as a redshirt freshman, he started the first three games, but was knocked out for the remainder of the season with a fractured/dislocated ankle.
