Mitchell Maxwell, an incoming freshman at Mississippi State, was found dead Thursday morning at his family’s home in Murfreesboro, Tenn., per the Murfreesboro Daily News Journal. The cause of death for the walk-on offensive lineman is currently unknown.

Maxwell played high school football at Riverdale High in Murfreesboro and was planning on joining the Bulldogs next week.

“We were moving him in to Mississippi State on Monday morning, so he could start classes and walk on to the football team,” said Austin Maxwell, Mitchell’s father. “He was already enrolled. I was going to help him move into the dorm in a few days.”

Maxwell graduated from Riverdale in May after a high school career that saw him earn all-area nods from the Daily News Journal in his junior and senior seasons. His father said the cause of his son’s death won’t be known until results from an autopsy come back.

Maxwell’s death is the second tragedy to hit a major Mississippi college football program this week. Park Stevens, a sophomore walk-on offensive lineman at Ole Miss, was killed in a car accident on Wednesday afternoon.
