LSU’s Jeremy Hill charged with battery for bar fight

Jeremy Hill should be a key part of LSU’s offense, but Les Miles will wait to see how the suspended running back’s legal woes stemming from a bar fight resolve themselves before making a decision to bring him back to the team.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

LSU running back Jeremy Hill has been officially charged in relation to an April bar fight, according to Jim Kleinpeter of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

The details of Hill’s fight were not pretty: According to the Times-Picayune, Hill and an accomplice allegedly punched a man twice, knocking him out, then high-fived, all of it captured on a cell phone video that ended up in the hands of the police. He was immediately suspended from LSU -- SB Nation’s And The Valley Shook wrote he needed to be removed from the team -- with Les Miles waiting to see the results of the court case before taking further action.

Hill was charged with simple battery Monday, as was an alleged accomplice. Hill’s situation is complicated by the fact that his apparent crime was in violation of probation placed on him due to his January 2012 guilty plea for “misdemeanor carnal knowledge of a juvenile.” A judge has placed a curfew on Hill and ordered him to undergo examination for substance abuse.

The rising sophomore led LSU with 755 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns in his freshman season, the most frequent ball-carrier amongst five rushers who got 40 or more carries. With Spencer Ware now on the Seahawks and Michael Ford now on the Bears, they’ve lost two members of that committee. If Hill’s legal troubles result in him having to leave the Tigers, LSU will be without the lion’s share of carries from a team that was more effective on the ground than in the air, potentially wrecking their hopes of having an offense that can get them enough points to earn wins behind an elite defense.
