Penn State and UCF to play at Croke Park in Dublin

College football is returning to Ireland in 2014, and it promises to be an extremely Irish affair full of Irish-ness.

LOCOG

There have been rumors for months that Penn State and UCF would play a game in Ireland in 2014, and that such a game would be a very Irish game. Those plans look like they are solidifying with the announcement of Croke Park as the host site, according to the Irish Times. The announcement also called the game a “fixture,” which is fun, although not really an exclusively Irish term. There has yet to be an official announcement from either program, but a change in matchup at this point would be a massive surprise.

Croke Park was originally constructed in 1913 and is the traditional home of the Gaelic Games. It has also held matches for the Irish national rugby and soccer teams, and holds over 82,000, making it the fourth largest stadium in Europe. The 2012 game between Notre Dame and Navy was held at the Aviva Stadium, which is also in Dublin.

Croke Park. Dublin. A pair of coaches named O’Brien and O’Leary. Two teams trying to pummel each other into slobbering oblivion. This is going to be really Irish. Like, really Irish. Like, renaming punting “kicking for touch” Irish.
