Now-former Virginia Tech RB Michael Holmes sought by JMU, reportedly

The young running back was kicked out of school after being convicted of assault and battery, but could find an in-state landing spot at James Madison.

Running back Michael Holmes has been “permanently separated” from Virginia Tech following a misdemeanor assault and battery conviction, according to Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times. Holmes was involved in a brawl in April, but managed to avoid a felony conviction. However, the student judicial board ruled that Holmes should not be allowed to continue as a Virginia Tech student.

James Madison is reportedly interested in bringing in Holmes and would be able to give him scholarship money if he decides to play there. Holmes would be eligible to play right away for the Dukes, since they’re an FCS program.

Holmes rushed for 280 yards and four touchdowns on 70 carries as a redshirt freshman in 2012 and was expected to be a contributor for the Hokies in 2013. He could have been the starter due to the lack of a clear number one back. J.C. Coleman and Trey Edmunds are left to compete for the starting job.
