Alabama, Notre Dame could play future football games in Ireland

The Irish could host as many as three more games before 2018, with Alabama and Notre Dame as potential programs making the trip across the pond for games. Er, fixtures.

Matt Cashore-US PRESSWIRE

The long-reported 2014 game fixture between Penn State and UCF at Dublin’s Croke Park was all but finally confirmed Tuesday morning. However, it would seem that the Irish are just getting started in the college football business, as they could host additional games fixtures in 2016 and 2018 that could include the likes of Alabama and Notre Dame, according to Irish publication The Journal.

The Gaelic Athletic Association, which is responsible for putting on these games, has reportedly already talked to Notre Dame about a return to Dublin in 2016 for a game fixture against a yet to be determined opponent at Croke Park. Alabama and Boston College were mentioned as possible participants, but that’s not written in stone by any means. At this point, no teams have officially begun talks about playing at Croke Park in either 2016 or 2018.

Notre Dame and Navy played in front of over 48,000 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin to open the 2012 season.
