Jaime Wilson injury: Western Michigan WR has broken ankle, could miss entire season

Wilson is the Broncos’ top returning receiver.

Marilyn Indahl-US PRESSWIRE

Western Michigan wide receiver Jaime Wilson has a broken left ankle, Broncos head coach P.J. Fleck told reporters Tuesday morning. Wilson will miss at least eight weeks and could be out for the entire 2013 season.

“It was just a freaky accident,” Fleck said. “He already had surgery. We got him in right away and now he’s on the road to recovery. We’re going to attack it like he’s going to come back and we’ll re-evaluate it when he’s ready.”

The injury is a serious blow to an offense that averaged 29.3 points per game in 2012. The Broncos bring back just five offensive starters this season, including Wilson, and the sophomore is WMU’s best returning pass catcher. As a freshman last year, he hauled in 67 receptions for 792 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 11.6 yards per catch. He missed two games due to injury last season, but put up four 100-yard games and was named MAC Freshman of the Year. He ranked fifth in the MAC with 79.2 yards per game.

Fleck said the team will let Wilson take his time to recover from the injury. The Broncos don’t want him to return too early and suffer another injury that could jeopardize his college career.
