With the first week of real live college football games just over one week away, fall camps are hitting the home stretch. Some key players picked up injuries on Tuesday that could affect their status to start the season, but the news wasn’t all bad. Here’s the major news you need to know from practices across the country on Tuesday.
College football fall camp headlines: I have good news and bad news
Injuries are unavoidable in football. Some teams got good news about injuries on Tuesday in practice, and a few got bad news. Below is the biggest news from Tuesday’s round of practices.
Harry How
Washington
Austin Seferian-Jenkins broke his pinkie in practice, and will go under the knife to get it fixed. There's no timetable for his return at the moment, but this complicates how and when he will return to the field for the Huskies because it's still unclear how much time he'll miss as a result of his offseason DUI arrest.
Oregon
The Ducks picked up a pair of injuries on Tuesday, but their severity appears to be different. True freshman running back Thomas Tyner was carted off the field while wearing a boot, but that seems to have been a precautionary step more than anything. The news isn't as good with tight end Pharaoh Brown, however, as he will be on the shelf for a couple weeks to start the season with a leg injury.
South Carolina
Star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was back at practice after missing the previous two with a shoulder injury, perhaps receiving the message from Head Ball Coach about needing to get back on the field.
Alabama
Nick Saban held a press conference after practice yesterday. The biggest takeaway is that linebacker Trey DePriest is suspended "for a short time" due to a violation of team rules, but should be back for the season opener against Virginia Tech.
UCLA
The Bruins have been playing physical in practice, so it may not be terribly surprising that a couple players are showing concussion-like symptoms, according to head coach Jim Mora:
The other main theme from today is unfortunately concussions. If you watch the video you will see Mora seemed to be a little miffed about it when talking about "bunch of guys" being out with "concussion-like symptoms." The guys who missed practice today are Kevin McReynolds, Alex Redmond, John Lopez, Ben Wysocki. Mora mentioned that Ian Taubler was sent home. I think Mora also mentioned Malcolm's name in that mix as well which was news to me.
Wisconsin
The quarterbacks didn’t look particularly good at the scrimmage on Monday, but things evened out for the Badger signal-callers at practice on Tuesday -- particularly Tanner McEvoy. This is one of the biggest position battles in the Big Ten and it looks like it will go right down to the wire.
Western Michigan
The Broncos could be without their best offensive weapon all year after wide receiver Jaime Wilson broke his ankle:
The injury is a serious blow to an offense that averaged 29.3 points per game in 2012. The Broncos bring back just five offensive starters this season, including Wilson, and the sophomore is WMU’s best returning pass catcher. As a freshman last year, he hauled in 67 receptions for 792 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 11.6 yards per catch. He missed two games due to injury last season, but put up four 100-yard games and was named MAC Freshman of the Year. He ranked fifth in the MAC with 79.2 yards per game.
